2012 Mexican-USA Roadtrip Tucson, AZ to Scottsdale, AZ

As special as Dimitri's reunion was with Pia and Angeliki in Tucson, our next destination held an even more significant reunion. Susan Ross and Audre have been friends since 1971 when we were both young associates at the then-called Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood, a Wall Street law firm in lower Manhattan. We were 2 out of 7 women lawyers at the firm, which was about 100 lawyers then.

In the mid-1970's Susan moved to Taos, NM to practice law and ski there. We were always in contact and Audre was always welcome to visit Susan and ski Taos. When we lived in Courchevel 1850, Susan and her significant other came to visit us there and ski with us. In Val d’Isère, Susan and Gary got engaged during apéritif at our house!

Over the years, as we have traveled, Susan and Gary have met us. But in recent years, we have not been able to connect. So our reunion in 2012 was special. We drove from Tucson to Scottsdale where we were invited to stay at their home--and what beautiful home it was! We brought them one of the flower arrangements we had bought in San Miguel de Allende and that customs inspected so thoroughly at the border. Click here to see it being made.

That evening, after Gary got home from work we had apéritif at their house and then went out to dinner. We hosted at the Carefree Station Grill & Bar (7212 Ho Hum Rd., Carefree, AZ 85377, tel. 480-488-8182, web: carefreestation.com) where we had a lovely meal sitting out on the terrace.

The next day Dimitri and Audre biked to Pinnacle Peak and hiked in that area. After having lunch we went to REI to get Dimitri a Garmin fenix GPS Smart Watch ($400). Then when everyone was home again, we had
apéritif on their back terrace and it was beautiful. Afterwards we went to Sassi (10455 E. Pinnacle Peak Pkwy., Scottsdale, AZ 85255, tel. 480-502-9095, www.sassi.biz). We sat outside on the veranda and it was a very nice meal.

Our stay was wonderful and we were very happy we could spend quality time with Susan and Gary.
